Welcome to Test Automation Patterns Wiki

About the Test Automation Patterns Wiki:

This wiki was created by Seretta Gamba and Dorothy Graham and is the subject of their co-authored book (see below). The wiki is currently moderated by Bryan Bakker and is hosted by EuroSTAR Software Testing Conferences. For more free Test Automation Resources see EuroSTAR Huddle.com or Join the test automation community in-person at AutomationSTAR, Europe's largest test automation conference.

How to get started:

There are two ways to help you get started in using this wiki. Using the Diagnostic (see below) is the best way to start online. However, we have also written a book that will help you get the most out of using the patterns in this wiki.

link=https://testautomationpatterns.org/wiki/images/thumb/e/ee/Book cover.jpg/100px-Book cover.jpeg

A Journey Through Test Automation Patterns follows the story of Liz, a test automator, who thought she had just got the best job in the world. Through a number of different experiences of her team, they learn to solve their problems (most of them) through using the test automation patterns. As we get to know the people on the team, we see how the patterns have helped to improve their automation, using very realistic examples.

Our book is self-published on Amazon, so is only available from Amazon, as a ‘print on demand” book (which includes wiki information) or as an ebook (first chapters, the story only).

Using the Diagnostic.
You don’t need to have the book to get started though - it fact it’s a good idea to start by just exploring what is in this wiki, and for this we have the Diagnostic.

The diagnostic asks you questions about where you are now in your automation to lead you to the issue(s)/problem(s) that are most relevant for you, and then to the patterns that will help you.

Note that you don't need to have any experience of automation to make use of the ideas here, although it might be helpful.

Test Automation Issues: what is an issue, typical test automation issues, classification of issues, and failure issues or anti-patterns.

Test Automation Patterns: what is a pattern, what a pattern is not, typical test automation patterns, classification of patterns.

Introduction and Background for this wiki, including Purpose and Scope, what's in the wiki, the history of the wiki, and how you can help contribute to it.

You are also welcome to browse the issues and patterns (using the links in the left-hand navigation panel). For example, if your main concern at the moment is that your previous attempts at automation seemed to get started but then faltered, STALLED AUTOMATION can be found on the Process Issues page. Each issue will suggest Patterns that can help. If you are new to automation, the issue NO PREVIOUS TEST AUTOMATION on the Management Issues page might be a good place to start.

This Wiki

This wiki is available to view publicly (read-only). If you have suggestions to add or change page content (e.g. to add your experiences), please follow the instructions on the Feedback page. Use this page also to tell us about any errors you find and any suggestions to improve it.
